Troopers responded to the scene of a vehicle roll-over on the Knik River streambed near Jim Creek early Saturday morning to find that an Anchorage man had died when the truck another was driving, rolled and crushed him under it. Troopers identified the man as 23-year-old Shawn Bounds of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Troopers identified the driver as 22-year-old Anchorage resident David Villaricencio.
The trooper investigation found that Villaricencio was driving his 1994 GMC Sierra pickup in the streambed of the Knik River, when he accelerated while turning the vehicle.
When the vehicle began rolling, Bounds was partially ejected from the vehicle. When the vehicle came to a rest on its hood, it had rolled over Bounds.
Troopers initiated CPR upon their arrival. Mat-Su Borough Emergency Responders and Life Med Medics also responded to the scene and attempted to treat Bounds, but they were ultimately unsuccessful and Bounds was declared deceased at 4:10 am.
Villaricencio was transported by Life Med helicopter for treatment of his non-life threatening injuries.
U.S. Army Alaska Command as well as next of kin were notified of the incident.
Alaska State Troopers are continuing their investigation of the incident.
