Washington, D.C. – Alaska Congressman Don Young today announced the 2015 Congressional Art Competition winner for Alaska, East Anchorage High School student Laura Horton recognized for her piece titled “Celebrating the Generations.”

“Each year I am impressed by the artistic talents displayed by young Alaskan artists and this year was no exception,” said Congressman Don Young. “Laura’s unique and creative art piece will represent Alaska well in the halls of Congress. Her infusion of Alaskan heritage and history will certainly captivate audiences, which will include heads of state and government, and countless Americans visiting the U.S. Capitol. I commend all of this year’s artists and look forward to being a part of this competition and tradition for years to come.”

In a statement accompanying the rising High School senior’s winning piece, Laura Horton wrote:

“This drawing represents generations in Alaska. It depicts a tree, my father, and myself. The layout of the drawing lets the viewer see, in a less obvious way, the number 100, because it is the 100th anniversary of the city of Anchorage. The people are wearing fur trimmed hoods to acknowledge the Native heritage in Alaska. It is drawn in graphite and white gel pen.”

Each spring, members of the House of Representatives sponsor a piece of artwork from a high school student within their district to be displayed in the halls of Congress for one year. Congressman Young has partnered with the Alaska Association of School Activities to select the Congressional Art Competition winner among Alaska high school students as part of the All-State Art Competition. Winners are honored at an annual awards ceremony held in Washington, D.C.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.
