APD credits a Nixle subscriber with the apprehension of a carjacker that stole a vehicle from a driver on Northway Drive on Tuesday evening near the Subway there.
Police responded to the Subway at 701 Northway Drive for a carjacking of a woman there to find that the suspect, who had been at the bus stop, approached the woman as she exited Subway.
According to the report, the suspect, now identified as 28-year-old Michael Eugene Sampo, produced a firearm, demanded the woman’s car keys, fired off a round into the ground, and left the scene in her vehicle.
APD released a Nixle Alert shortly after 7 pm. An alert driver read the Nixle and spotted the suspect vehicle on the New Seward Highway, near Benson Avenue, headed toward downtown.
Officers located the vehicle and followed it to 15th and Denali, then on to 5th and Concrete Street, where police, citing safety concerns to the public, used a patrol car to disable the stolen vehicle.
Armed, Sampo exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. APD released a K-9 Unit, that took off after Sampo, catching him a short distance away. Sampo was taken into custody and faces multiple charges including Robbery 1, Vehicle Theft and Reckless Endangerment.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
