Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum was challenged on his views about gay marriage last night in New Hampshire. Santorum is an outspoken opponent to gay marriage and is in favor of a Constitutional Amendment that would define marriage as a union between only one man and one woman.
The challenge last night came from a group of College Republicans in Concord. Santorum was definitely on the defensive as the discussion threatened to become a verbal free for all. He told the group that he disagreed with New Hampshire’s legalization of same sex marriage and likened gay marriage to polygamy, this drew jeers from portions of the crowd there.
His views on gay marriage played well in Iowa this week, and it showed in the election results. But New Hampshire is much more moderate than the conservative voters of Iowa and his views may well cause him some difficulties as he vies for votes in that state.
He told the people gathered there, “I believe we are made the way God made man and woman, and man and woman come together to have a union to produce children, which keeps civilization going and provide the best environment for children to be raised.”
As he exited the event, he was cheered by some, but also booed by many in the crowd.
