A large rock fell off of a construction vehicle traveling in the construction zone near mile 58.7 of the Sterling Highway on Thursday afternoon killing an eight-year-old boy, troopers are reporting.
Troopers responded to the scene on the Sterling Highway 10 miles from Cooper Landing at 1:23 pm on Thursday after receiving a report that a volleyball-sized rock had gone through the windshield of a GTI Hatchback severely injuring a child.
When troopers arrived they found that life-saving measures had been administered without success and that eight-year-old Noah Schwebach of Eagle River, had succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation at the scene found that the rock had fallen from a rock truck, went through the windshield and struck Noah, who was sitting in the middle of the back seat along with two his two brothers. After striking Noah the rock bounced out of the vehicle.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adversal-468×60″]
Because there were many work trucks hauling rocks through the time of the accident, the vehicle that the rock fell from has not been positively identified, AST reports.
No other injuries were reported by the other four occupants of the vehicle.
Noah’s remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office. The investigation is continuing.
