A head-on collision at mile 155 of the Sterling highway resulted in serious injuries that resulted in death for the driver of one vehicle according to Alaska State Troopers.
It was 11 am on Saturday morning that a call went in to the the Soldotna Public Safety Communication Center reporting a crash on the Sterling Highway. Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Anchor Point as well as EMS responded to the scene of the accident. The Kenai Peninsula team of the Bureau of Highway Patrol also responded and took over the investigation.
When they arrived at the accident location, they found the only passenger of a Pontiac Transport van, 53-year-old Dale Keefer, had suffered serious life-threatening injuries in the accident between the Pontiac, driven by 24-year-old Anchor Point resident Richard Twing, and a 1997 Ford Expedition driven by 29-year-old Homer resident Arwen Weisser.
Although Keefer was the only person to suffer life-threatening injuries, all other passengers and drivers of the two vehicles were transferred to the South Peninsula for injuries of varying degrees. Weisser and the four children in the Expedition suffered minor injuries.
On Sunday, it was reported to troopers that, Dale Keefer had succumbed to his injuries sustained in the accident.
According to the trooper dispatch of the Bureau of Highway Patrol investigation, Weisser, driving the Expedition, crossed over the centerline of the highway while heading northbound on the highway when he struck the van traveling southbound in an off-set head-on collision.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
