The Alutiiq Museum seeks to buy works of contemporary art for its permanent collection. Grant funds from the Rasmuson Foundation’s Art Acquisition program will support purchases that reflect the cultural history and environment of the Alutiiq world, and are suitable for exhibition. Following Rasmuson guidelines, works must be current (less than 5 years old), and made by a contemporary artist living in the State of Alaska. Artists are encouraged to submit up to five pieces for consideration.
To make a submission, artists should download application materials below, visit the museum’s web site, or contact the museum’s registrar, Marnie Leist, for assistance at 907-486-7004, marnie@alutiiqmuseum.org. Application materials are due by Friday, July 19th, 2013. The museum’s staff, volunteer collections advisory committee, and board of directors, will then consider the objects offered for purchase and select those that best fit the funder guidelines and the museum’s needs. Selections will be made in August.
The museum will consider all submissions but is particularly interested in obtaining examples of skin sewing (e.g., foot wear, breaches, men’s hats), as well as kayaking gear (e.g., gunnel board, bailer, harpoon, paddles), and woven mats.
