Alaska State Trooper K-9 “Chevron” assisted in two drug arrests on Monday on the North Kenai Peninsula.
“Chevron’s” is first assist came following a Bureau Highway Patrol South-Central Team traffic stop on a Subaru sedan near mile 111 of the sterling Highway near Kasilof. With “Chevron’s” assistance, troopers discovered that a passenger in the vehicle, 29-year-old Wasilla resident Candace McCloud, was in possession of marijuana.
Subsequently, the marijuana was seized, and McCloud was issued a misdemeanor citation for MICS VI. After a promise to appear in court, McCloud was released at the scene.
Then, approximately 12 hours later, as Alaska State troopers with the Bureau Highway Patrol South-Central Team conducted another traffic stop, this one on a black Chevy truck, “Chevron’s” abilities were again called into play.
After pulling the black Chevy over for both equipment and moving violations, state troopers would find that the driver, 34-year-old Caleb A. Smith of Kasilof, was on probation and was in violation of those conditions.
“Chevron’s” assistance would reveal that Smith was illegally possessing crystal methamphetamine and approximately 5.5 ounces of marijuana. During the trooper investigation it was discovered that Smith had tampered with physical evidence by spilling the crystal meth in his possession into the dirt on the floorboards and grinding it in with his feet.
Smith was arrested on charges of MICS IV x2, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Probation Violations.
Smith was remanded to the Wildwood Pretrial Facility and held without bail.
