After exploring the Pacific, Captain George Vancouver turned north into the Pacific Northwest in 1793 before setting south to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) to winter there before setting sail to Cook Inlet in search of the Northwest Passage.

After Cook Inlet, Vancouver set south along the coastline, drawing detailed charts along the way through 1794.

In August of 1794 he anchored his ships, the HMS Discovery and the tender Chatham in a small bay on the southeast coast of Baranof Island for the final month of his Alaskan expedition.

On August 22nd, 1794, he weighed anchor and set his sails for Cape Horn and ultimately Europe. It was on that day that he named his final landmark in Alaska, the bay in which he had anchored, Port Conclusion, as he sailed away.
