Although the Anchorage Police Department declined to identify the suspect that barricaded himself in and stood them off for five hours on Monday, they did report that the man ultimately committed suicide rather than to give himself up to authorities.
The scenario began when Anchorage police attempted a traffic stop on a Volkswagen Sedan at 10:55 am near DeBarr and Pine Streets on Monday. The driver of the vehicle, who was known to have had a felony warrant for his arrest, and instead of stopping, sped away, heading to an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Reka Drive.
When he arrived at that location, the suspect, exited his “vehicle and barricaded himself inside one of the apartments,” police reported.
Police closed down the streets at Reka Drive and Pine and then began a systematic “search and evacuation” of each of the apartments in the 42-apartment complex. As they were doing so, police report that the suspect fired several shots, damaging the building, but no one was injured in the gunfire.
The department’s SWAT Team as well as negotiators responded to the scene, then at just before 4 pm, the suspect exited the apartment onto the balcony and shot himself. He died at the scene.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
