Black Ice/High Speed Factors in Chena Hot Springs Fatality

black iceAlaska State Troopers in Fairbanks received a report of a two-vehicle collision on Chena Hot Springs Road and Nichols Lane on Sunday night.

When troopers arrived at he scene at 23:04 pm, they found injuries at the crash site. EMS responded and attempted to treat one of the crash victims, 52-year-old David Haase, but their attempts were unsuccessful and Haase was declared deceased at the scene at 11:20 pm.

The other crash victim, 53-year-old Clear resident James Graham, suffered only minor injuries.

The investigation at the scene revealed that Haase, in his 1998 Honda Prelude, had been traveling at a high rate of speed, reported to be approximately 80 mph, east on Chena Hot Springs Road, when he lost control and slid into the westbound lane.  At the time of the accident, the roadway was slick with black ice trooper dispatch reports.

When Haase sid into the westbound lane, he ended up directly in the path of Graham, traveling west. Graham impacted Haase’s vehicle in the front passenger side of Haase’s vehicle,

Graham was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision, Haase was not.

The Northern Bureau of Highway Patrol assumed case responsibility, the investigation is ongoing.

Haase’s next of kin was notified.
