A tour bus operated by Scapadas Magicas of National City, California was involved in a horrific crash that killed at least eight and injured another 38 Sunday night at 6:30 pm.
The tour bus was on its way back from Tijuana, Mexico, and was on Route 38 about eighty miles east of Los Angeles when it careened out of control as it was traveling down the mountain road. As it sped out of control, it rear-ended a Saturn sedan, flipped and struck a Ford pickup truck hauling a trailer. The driver of the bus, who survived the terrible crash said that the brakes on the bus failed. Witnesses say that they saw smoke trailing behind the bus as it sped through the San Bernadino National Forest.
Debris littered the highway as the bus lay sideways in the road with its top peeled open like a sardine can, the top of the bus by the driver’s seat crushed. According to the spokesmwoman from the California Department of Transportation, Michelle Profant, “It’s really a mess up there with body parts.”
A multitude of ambulances could be seen snaking along the road to and from the scene.
California Highway Patrol Spokesman Mario Lopez also said of the scene, “It’s a horrific scene, probably one of the worst ones I have seen in my career. There are victims inside the bus, outside the bus, personal belongings [everywhere].”
A National Transportation Safety Board team is investigating the scene in an attempt to ascertain the cause of the crash.
The death toll is expected to rise today.
