On Friday, August 14, at approximately 8:40 p.m., the Alaska State Troopers were alerted to a reported disturbance in Emmonak. Troopers responded to the scene and located 37-year-old Emmonak resident Anita Hootch deceased inside an abandoned steam bath.
They also found 38-year-old Emmonak resident Christopher Horn inside the structure suffering from knife wounds.
Horn was medevaced to an Anchorage hospital, where he was treated for injuries that were determined to be non-life-threatening.
A preliminary investigation conducted by Emmonak-based Troopers and investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation determined that Horn had fatally stabbed Hootch then used the same knife to inflict injuries on himself. Investigators continued working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather additional evidence.
On Tuesday, Horn was released from the Anchorage hospital and subsequently arrested by Alaska State Troopers. He was transported to the Anchorage Correctional Complex where he was remanded on charges of Murder in the First Degree and Assault in the Third Degree.
Hootch’s next of kin have been notified of her death.
Her remains were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy as the investigation continues.
