PETERSBURG, Alaska — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Anacapa rescued a man from a disabled fishing vessel near Petersburg Monday.
The crew of the Anacapa rendezvoused with the man aboard his 30-foot fishing vessel, the Lisa Cheri, which was at anchor after becoming disabled six miles southeast of Petersburg. The man was transferred aboard the cutter and transported to awaiting emergency medical personnel in Petersburg to be treated for symptoms of shock.
Watchstanders at the Sector Juneau command center received a report from a relative of the man Monday morning, stating the man’s vessel had become disabled and he needed help. Sector Juneau dispatched the crew of the Anacapa to the man’s location to provide assistance.
Sector Juneau personnel are monitoring the vessel, which remains at anchor, and will work with the owner to arrange salvage.
“The Lisa Cheri’s master wisely reached out for assistance before the situation deteriorated,” said Lt. Ryan Erickson, chief of incident management, Coast Guard Sector Juneau. “We recommend all mariners keep the Coast Guard apprised of developments in their voyage that may prevent them from reaching port or threatens the safety or health of anyone aboard.”
Weather on scene consisted of 30 mph winds and 3-foot seas.
The Coast Guard Cutter Anacapa is a 110-foot Island Class cutter homeported in Petersburg. Its crew conducts law enforcement, search and rescue, national defense and marine resource protection missions.
