KODIAK, Alaska – The Coast Guard suspended the search for a fisherman who fell overboard off a 24-foot fishing vessel near Goodnews Bay 97 miles south of Bethel Monday at 4:45 p.m.
A coordinated search for the missing fisherman covering more than 130 square miles was conducted by a Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules airplane crew, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, an Alaska State Trooper airplane crew and 10 good Samaritan fishing vessels.
The 17th Coast Guard District command center watchstanders received a call at 10:04 a.m. from the Goodnews Bay clinic reporting the fisherman fell overboard wearing a green rain suit and no life jacket 60 feet from shore.
The fisherman’s name is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin by the Goodnews Bay village public safety officer. The search will remain suspended pending any new information.
Weather conditions in the search area were reportedly winds of 16 mph with three foot seas. The water temperature is reportedly 45 degrees Fahrenheit and an air temperature of 53 degrees Fahrenheit.
