Driver and Passenger of Disabled Vehicle Arrested after Trooper Contact

The trooper dispatch reported on Monday that, on last Wednesday, Crown point Troopers patrolling Moose Pass on the Kenai Peninsula north of Seward, observed a vehicle parked with its hood up along the road and stopped to investigate and provide assistance and instead arrested the driver and passenger of the vehicle on a variety of charges that included drug possession.

At 7:48 pm, Crown Point Troopers in Moose Pass stopped and made contact with the driver of a vehicle that was apparently having engine problems. The driver was identified as 43-year-old Robert Maal, troopers found that Maal’s license was revoked. As their investigation continued, heroin and a firearm were also located in the vehicle.

Troopers arrested Maal on charges of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance and Driving While License Revoked.

A query into the identity of Maal’s passenger would reveal that the passenger was 36-year-old Daniel Orlino of Anchorage. Troopers would find that Orlino had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for Failure to Comply with Probation.

Orlino had been indicted in 2013 on charges of Terror Threat II (Class C Felony) and was convicted on that charge in July of 2014. He received a sentence of 36 months with 24 months suspended and placed on probation for three years. As conditions, Orlino was prohibited from using or possessing  drugs, alcohol or firearms. An Anchorage court last month petitioned to revoke probation.

Orlino was ordered transported to Anchorage with his bail set at $2,000.

Maal was arraigned in Seward court and his bail set at $500 for the DWLR charge, court records show no charge for drug possession.
