Late Friday night, the Glenn Highway was the scene of a head-on collision at mile 53. Alaska State Troopers with the Bureau of Highway Patrol, a Palmer Patrol Trooper, Sutton Fire and EMS, and Palmer Fire and EMS responded to the reported accident with injuries at 11:15 pm.
The drivers of both vehicles were injured in the accident. As EMS prepared and transferred the two men to the hospital, troopers conducted their investigation of the accident.
Their investigation determined that while 61-year-old Peter Wilson of Sutton was traveling southbound on the Glenn Highway in his 2008 Ford F-150, he crossed over the centerline of the highway into the oncoming lanes of travel as 46-year-old Gerhard Jakits was approaching in the northbound lane in his Mitsubishi sedan. The two vehicles impacted head-on.
Wilson was transported to Mat-Su Regional where he was treated for minor injuries. Troopers contacted Wilson while at the hospital and it was determined that Wilson was driving under the influence of alcohol. After Wilson’s release from the facility, he was arrested and transported to Mat-Su Pretrial.
Jakits was transported to an Anchorage Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Jakits remains in the hospital in critical condition.
Wilson was charged with DUI and Assault I. WIlson was also found to have an active warrant for leaving the scene of a prior accident.
Wilson was held without bail for the charges stemming from the current accident and bail was set at $500 for the active warrant.
Other charges against Wilson are pending as the investigation into the accident continues.
