Freezing rain, snow and high winds have been pummeling Fairbanks and interior Alaska. The Winter conditions have knocked out power and closed schools in Alaska's interior city.
At least 8,000 homes are still without power today after winds as high as 55 miles per hour swept through the region last night. Golden Valley Electric asks for patience in a recorded message as they work to get power back on for their customers. In a statement on their site, GVEA ask people to be wary of downed power lines. They rep[oort 13 crews out working on restoring power and say they anticipate power to be restored by afternoon for a majority of their customers.
Although higher temperatures in Fairbanks have reached 37 degrees, winds of 40 miles per hour still exist. Blowing snow in the area has visibility down to half a mile at times.
Icy road conditions and reduced visibilty have prompted schools to remain closed for a second day.
Although Alaska Airlines found it necessary to cancel five flights into Fairbanks yesterday, no flights have been cancelled thus far today.
As the low moves past, temperatures in the area are expected to drop and the region will see temperatures in the teens and single digits in the coming days with lows reaching as low as -17 by Monday.
