ELIM-A location just outside of Elim, on Sunday morning would see a fatal crash that took the lives of two of the communities members.
Heather Sacceus, age 19 and Oscar Takak Jr, also age 19, both succumbed to their injuries as a result of an early morning pickup truck rollover as Sacceus tried to negotiate a turn in the road. Survivors say that the driver Heather Saccheus, was not familiar with a stick shift.
According to trooper reports, the vehicle was traveling at 60 to 70 miles an hour on a gravel road when the incident occurred. Reports indicate that alcohol was involved and none of the six passengers of the vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time.
Five passengers in the vehicle were ejected as the vehicle rolled approximately four times before coming to a rest. One of the passengers, John Jemewouk, age 19, ran for help and to report the accident. Troopers were made aware at 7:45 am. April Daniels, age 16, alone did not get thrown from the vehicle.
Arnold Saccheus, age 23, the owner of the vehicle and Desiree Murray, 19, were flown to Anchorage for serious injuries, while Daniels and Jemewouk were treated for minor injuries in Elim.
Elim is an Inupiat village located on the southern shores of the Seward Peninsula. It is approximately 96 miles east of Nome.
