William S. Stemmons went before Judge Ralph R. Beistline on February 4th and was sentenced for committing fraud against the Social Security Administration.
Although the prosecution wanted jail time for Stemmons, Judge Beistline sentenced Stemmons to four months of home confinment and ordered him to pay restitution of $57,991.40. He will also be placed on five years of probation after he finishes his time at home.
Stemmons moved to Alaska in 2012 from Tinker Air Force Base, he was indicted in 2013 on charges of wire fraud, false statements, and aggravated Identity Theft in June of 2013 in Denver, Colorado.
The case was a result of an investigation by the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, Office of Investigations in Seattle and Denver. It was that investigation that linked Stemmons to the theft of over $57,000 from the Social Security Administration by filing for retirement benefits for his father, who was living outside of the United States at the time.
Stemmons was working in law enforcement and as a military security guard at the time that he was drawing off his father’s retirement benefits. It wasn’t until his father filed for his retirement benefits that Stemmon’s crime came to light.
The case was transferred to Alaska from Colorado with agreements made by the United States Attorneys Offices and United States District Courts in both states.
Stemmons pled guilty to one count of wire fraud in a plea agreement in November, 2013, and admitted to stealing the retirement benefits during the period between 2006 to 2010.
