KETCHIKAN, ALASKA-A council member from the Ketchikan City Council has been arrested on child pornography charges. According to reports, 80-year-old John W. "Jack" Shay had child pornography material on his laptop computer.
Shay, the former mayor of Ketchikan and the Gateway Borough, is being investigated after bringing his laptop computer to a local computer repair shop in Ketchikan. He brought in his laptop to be looked at because it refused to print. When workers at the business attached a printer and re-started his computer, it began printing out child porn that had been queued up for print. The computer shop immediately reported the incident to the Ketchikan police.
Police seized the computer from the shop and applied for and received search warrants for the computer equipment and Shay’s home. When the police served the warrant at his home at 6:30 pm on Friday, Shay was present. Investigators found more printed child pornography during the search. According to Deputy Police Chief Josh Dossett, “We found additional printed-off material of young children performing sexual acts.”
Shay told police at the scene, that he nothing to say and wanted to talk to his lawyer. He then left his residence. Later that night, Shay performed at a school play where he had a small part. When he returned home after the performance around 10:30 pm, he was placed under arrest.
Shay made a court appearance on Saturday, he was released on a $30,000 bail. He performed at Saturday’s rendition of the school play that evening.
The investigation of video tapes, thumb drives and computer equipment continues at the department. Shay had no comment for the press. His lawyer, Dennis McCarty did not either.
