November 15, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell ordered state flags to fly at half-staff on Thursday, November 17, in honor and memory of former State Representative Phillip Guy. He died Sunday night at the age of 70.
Guy was raised in the Yup’ik community of Kwethluk. He was elected in 1972 to the Alaska House and served until 1980. He was an early president of the Association of Village Council Presidents and worked as a land planner for Kwethluk Incorporated before his retirement.
“Representative Guy will be remembered for his devotion to his community and culture,” Governor Parnell said. “We appreciate his service during a pivotal and fascinating time in our state’s history. We will keep the Guy family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Guy is survived by his wife, four children and many grandchildren. State flags will be lowered on Thursday in honor of Guy. Flags will be raised to full-staff the following morning.
