It was reported by the Alaska State Trooper Dispatch on Wednesday that the Kodiak Trooper Post received a report of human remains being found on one of the archipelago’s islands on Monday.
Troopers traveled to Shuyak Island, which lies approximately 70 miles to the north of the city of Kodiak. When they arrived at the remote location on the east side of the island, they recovered the remains.
The condition of the remains were deemed in too deteriorated to identify and so were forwarded to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage in an effort to elicit a positive identification.
Shuyak Island is separated from Afognak Island by Shuyak Strait and is only 65 square miles wide. The island is largely comprised of the Shuyak State Park and at last count had four people inhabiting the island.
