The trooper dispatch reported on Thursday afternoon that they had responded to the remote island of Shuyak, 50 air-miles north of the city of Kodiak, to conduct a welfare check on a man there after receiving a request to do so on Tuesday, only to find that the man was a victim of homicide.

Kodiak-based troopers received a request for a welfare check at the Port William Wilderness Lodge on Shuyak Island at 8:37 am on Tuesday and responded to the northern-most island of the Kodiak Archipelago. When they arrived, they found a 56-year-old man, later identified as 56-year-old Steven McCaulley of Kodiak, dead outside of the lodge’s bunkhouse, their preliminary investigation determined the man died of a gunshot wound.

Their investigation developed a potential suspect and also found that the suspect had departed the area and had traveled to Anchorage. Troopers shared that information with Anchorage police on Wednesday. Anchorage police acted on that information and located the suspect and arrested him on unrelated outstanding arrest warrants, troopers disclosed.

Because one of the outstanding warrants was for failure to remand to jail, the suspect is currently incarcerated and unable to post bail.

Troopers are working with the District Attorney’s office in Kodiak to determine if additional charges relating to the homicide are going to be filed.

The victim’s remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy. Efforts are still underway to locate the victim’s next of kin.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
