Senator Michael Crapo, the 61-year-old Idaho Republican, who ran a red light that resulted in him being stopped and charged with a DUI in the State of Virginia pleaded guilty to the charge on Friday.
Senator Crapo, was stopped in the early morning hours of December 23rd in Alexandria, Virginia, which is across the river from Washington D.C.
Shortly after he was arrested, he issued an apology for the incident, saying, “I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance,” Crapo said. “I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. Crapo continued, saying,“I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.”
Senator Crapo was true to his word, and owned up to the violation in court Friday. The DUI in Virginia was the Senator’s first. He received a $250 fine and a 12-month suspension of his driver’s license and must complete an alcohol safety program. A 180 day jail sentence was also given, but it was suspended as long as he remains on good behavior.
The charge of running a red light was dropped.
Senator Crapo didn’t receive any special treatment, he received the typical sentence for a first-time drunk-driver in the state of Virginia.
