The driver of the private bus and the ringleader in the brutal rape of the Indian student who died two weeks later, was found hung in his jail cell by guards at 5 am on Monday.

33-year-old Ram Singh, was identified as the ringleader of the gang of men and one juvenile that brutally beat and raped the 23-year-old girl in December. After beating and raping her, at times using a metal pipe, the gang threw her into the road from the bus, leaving her there suffering from her extensive injuries.

Singh was due to appear in court today. His death will be investigated, he had previously been put on suicide watch. Singh used his clothing to fashion a noose with which to take his life according to reports coming out of India.

Singh’s lawyer, V.K. Anand and parents say that Singh did not kill himsef and instead was murdered. Anand said that Singh was not under any stress, had been visiting with his family daily and was very happy. He has demanded an inquery.

Singh and his friends had been drinking extensively on the night that they committed their heinous crime. Their two victims, the young girl and her boyfriend, boarded the private bus thinking it was a regular public bus.

The brutal attack and rape ignited protests throughout the country, but does not seem to have slowed down the instances of rapes in the country.
