The tug and barge ran aground after the towline between the two vessels parted and the crew was attempting to re-establish the tow. The vessels were not attached at the time of the grounding.
The Polar Wind is carrying over 18,000 gallons of fuel according to the Coast Guard. The barge’s cargo is heavy equipment and almost 1.5 million pounds of frozen seafood.
The tug’s owners have hired Global Diving and Salvage to conduct the operation to retrieve the tug and barge. Alaska Chadux is on hand to deal with any pollution issues that may arise.
