The much publicized trial of Anders Breivik, the notorious Norwegian who admits to the slaying of 77 innocent people, many of them children, in a dual attack in Oslo last July, has come to a close.
The defense today gave their closing arguments to the five judges presiding over the trial. During the closing arguments defense attorney Geirt Lippestad asked the judge for the “mildest possible sentence” because Breivik acted out of political convictions in the interest of the country. He pointed out that this can be seen by Breivik’s choice of targets, the center-left coalition government and the Labor Party Youth Camp.
Lippestad went on to describe his client as an ordinary young man. He said Breivik had good friends and collegues. Then asserting his clients sanity, asked the court “would a man who was mentally ill have been allowed to join a shooting club?”
Breivik also took to the stand to make a final argument on his own behalf, he read from a pre-written statement. His statement to the court was not broadcast because as one support group member, Christian Bjelland said, “He has a right to talk – we have no duty to listen.”
Breivik rambled on with his 45 minute statement as 30 people, family members of the people he murdered, left from the courtroom.
Breivik told the court that his actions were barbaric but a necessary part of his battle to halt immigration. He pointed out to the court that he was sane and that 35 of 37 doctors who examined him found no evidence of pychosis.
He said instead, he was just terribly frustrated by the lack of support from the public for “ultra-nationalists,” and “cultural conservatives.” Breivik went on to list a number of his complaints against the country’s Labor Party. He complained that the party was rooted in communism, and even said that both Labour Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and his father, former Foreign Minister Thorvald Stoltenberg, both had code names with the KGB.

He added that his brothers in the movement are following his case as they plan new attacks, and said to the judges that they will be judged themselves, and that nationalists are amazed that there haven’t been attacks like this before.
He also, during his statement, offered a peace proposal to the country, as part of the proposal, he recommended letting ultra-nationalists set up “states within the state” so that the nationalists can avoid living in what he called a “multi-cultural hell.”
Although he did not elaborate on the people that turned away and left the courtroom as he began to speak, he said the worse thing about his situation wasn’t the “demonization” that he feels, but rather “the worst of all is to be ignored.”
The judges are expected to announce their verdict on August 24th of this year.
