According to the spokesman for Mayor William Bell of Birmingham, there was no distress call made from the aircraft before the crash.
Reports coming from Birmingham say the aircraft struck a large tree north of the runway and clipped power lines before crashing into a field and bursting into flames. The crash cut power to many homes in the area. No one on the ground was injured. Debris was lttered across Airport Heights and the Zion City area.
The National Transportation Safety Board has a Go Team enroute to the scene and is due to arrive there at 12 pm CDT. There are no reports as to the cause of the crash and that will not be determined until investigators are able to access the “black boxes” aboard the aircraft.
Investigators will first look into the possiblity that something was wrong with the aircraft itself to determine if there are risks to aircraft of similar design.
One of the occupants of the aircraft has been identified as Shanda Fanning. Her husband, Bret Fanning, was informed of the incident and his wife’s death while at work at their family-run distillery.
