After receiving a tip that a Chalkyitsik man had taken a moose out of season, Fairbanks troopers immediately traveled to the community via state aircraft to investigate on Monday.
Once there, troopers conducted an investigation and determined that 63-year-old Woodie Salmon had taken a moose out of season in Game Management Unit 25D on Sunday. The moose hunting season doesn’t open in that area until September 10th, and doesn’t open on federal lands in the area until August 25th.
As a result of the investigation, Woodie was issued a citation for taking a moose during closed season. Woodie’s rifle as well as the antlers were seized. Wildlife troopers were unable to seize the meat as it had already been widely distributed throughout the community prior to their arrival.
Woodie appeared for arraignment in the Fort Yukon District Court on Monday.
