A 71-year-old Scammon Bay man was reported overdue on Tuesday after he had gone out from the village to check his Black Fish traps. The community’s VPSO reported the missing fisherman to the troopers at 9:15 pm that evening.

It was reported that Daniel Tunutmoak Sr had set out on his snow machine to set Black Fish traps and had not returned from his outing.

At 10:40 pm, Scammon Bay SAR Volunteers launched a search on snow machines and departed to the north of the community to search areas known to be fished by Tunutmoak.  The weather at the time was calm with partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 19 degrees Fahrenheit.

After a search of less than an hour, Tunutmoak was located walking well away from the established trails approximately four miles north of Scammon Bay. When found, Tunutmoak was healthy and uninjured. The 71-year-old man reported that his snow machine had broke down.

Tunutmoak was transported back to the community. He reported that he did not require medical assistance.
