The search for an unidentified male in apparent distress was called off on Tuesday morning after a an intensive search by several teams on Monday outside of Juneau.
It was on early Monday afternoon that the first report came in, from a hiking party on the East Glacier Trail near Nugget Falls at the Mendenhall Glacier, of a “male voice yelling for help,” according to the trooper dispatch.
The hiking party reported the incident to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and a United States Forest Service employee responded to the location and would also hear the voice. As a result of that confirmation, at 3:15 pm, a TEMSCO helicopter flew the area searching for a person in distress or in need of assistance.
Further, five search teams, comprised of Capital City Fire Rescue, Juneau Mountain Rescue, and SEADOGS took up the search of the area, but their efforts uncovered no clues to the unidentified origin of the yell for help. Search efforts came to an end at 8:56 pm. The voice was last heard earlier in the afternoon at 3:02 pm.
As of Tuesday morning, there had been no reports of overdue hikers, and no reports of missing persons. Subsequently, search efforts were suspended on Tuesday morning, but troopers state that search efforts will resume if additional clues are uncovered.
