SITKA — The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program will host a women’s community sweat lodge event from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Yeesdooseigu Xáay, the New Breath Sweat Lodge located behind the SEARHC Daycare Center in Sitka. Women also are invited to meet at noon to create prayer ties for the sweat.
This is a traditional ceremony that cleanses. Women of all ages will gather for three hours, but can go in and out of the heat if needed. Harry Bradley of the SEARHC Gunaanastí Bill Brady Healing Center will assist with the sweat.
It is suggested to fast with juice and water the day of the sweat lodge, but not required. Women are welcome to bring light foods for a post-sweat potluck after the event. Participants should bring a water bottle, towels, and wear loose-fitting clothing or a bathing suit in the lodge.
