On September 14th, 1916, Bishop Philip Stavitsky of the Russian Orthodox Church arrived in Juneau.

It was Bishop Stavitsky’s first trip to the north as he took over the church in the territory.

The Bishop would stop next in Sitka to celebrate the centennial of Orthodoxy in Alaska.

His leadership of the church in Alaska was short-lived, he left in 1917 to become the Bishop of Smolensk.

The Bishop’s position would remain vacant for a number of years after his departure.
