Less than four hours after the Springfield abduction of a 10-year-old girl at 4:50 pm on Tuesday, Springfield police arrested the man they believe is responsible for the young girl's disappearance and murder.
10-year-old Hailey Owens was abducted by a man in a gold-colored Ford Ranger as she was walking home after visiting a friend on West Lombard Street in Springfield on Tuesday afternoon.
A multi-state Amber Alert was quickly triggered after the incident that was witnessed by two residents on the street where 5-foot-2 Hailey was pulled into the pickup truck.
The witnesses, a man and wife, sitting in their garage near where the abduction took place, were apparently unseen by the man now identified as Craig Michael Wood. They watched as Woods drove up and down the street several times before pulling up to the young girl and asking her the location of Springfield Street. Woods then pulled Hailey into the vehicle, over the driver’s side and into the passenger seat and drove away.
One of the witnesses ran after the truck while the other took down the license plate of the vehicle and called 911.
Those tips would lead the police to a residence where the vehicle was found. Wood was located inside at 8:30 pm. After finding evidence of foul play in the vehicle and house where 30 officers combed the scene, Woods was detained and held on suspicion of Murder.
Although the family has said that police told them Hailey’s body was recovered, police are still declining to say if this is true.
45-year-old Wood is an employee of the Pleasant View K-8 school where he worked as a athletic coach and paraprofessional. He has since been suspended.
Hailey was a student at Westport Elementary School. It is believed that Haily did not know Woods.
UPDATE
