It was announced on Friday by Spokane police that they had made an arrest in the case of the fatal beating of an 88-year-old World War II Veteran that had taken place on Wednesday night at about 8 pm.
Delbert Belton, known affectionately as “Shorty” because of his height, was rushed to the Sacred Heart Medical Center and placed in Intensive Care after being brutally beaten on Wednesday night. He died on Thursday from head injuries. He was attacked in what police say was a random act of violence near the Eagle Lodge in Spokane, where he was a member. Belton was attacked outside of the ice arena a short distance from his destination. He was headed to the Lodge to play pool with friends according to the Spokane Police.
The two suspects in the case were described as young African American males, with approximate ages of 16 and 19 and of average build. Police released images of the two suspects that they gathered from surveillance video.
Police attempted to locate the two suspects using K-9s Wednesday night, but were unsuccessful.
Now Spokane police say they have made an arrest in what they are saying was a random attack. The suspect has been charged with First Degree Murder and First Degree Robbery. The second suspect remains at-large.
Belton was a World War II veteran who survived the bloody 82-day-long battle at Okinawa in 1945, where he suffered only a leg wound. He later went on to work at Kaiser Aluminum where he was employed for 30 years before retiring.
Although Belton’s wife died years ago, Belton is survived by a 65-year-old son.
Friends, family, as well as strangers, left flags, flowers and messages outside the lodge for Belton on Thursday.
