A report of shots fired went in to the Dillingham-based Alaska State Troopers from the community of Koliganek on Saturday.

Troopers responded from Dillingham and traveled to Koliganek to investigate the report.

The trooper investigation at the scene would determine that an altercation at a residence in Koliganek escalated to a fight over a weapon on Saturday. During the scuffle over control of the weapon, the firearm discharged.

No one was injured when the weapon went off.

Troopers arrested 50-year-old John Norbert III and charged him with Assault III, Misconduct Involving a Weapon IV, and Reckless Endangerment after their investigation.

Troopers say that alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Norbert was transported to Dillingham where he was remanded to the Dillingham Detention Facility pending arraignment.

Koliganek and its population of approximately 200 people lies about 60 miles to the northeast of Dillingham.
