Troopers Search Seward Highway for Two in Distress, Arrest one on Warrant

Alaska State Troopers report that early on Wednesday morning they made a warrant arrest after receiving a call requesting a welfare check on two people in a vehicle at mile 76 of the Seward Highway.

A caller called in to the troopers at 1:07 am on Wednesday morning and requested a welfare check on two people in a vehicle on the Seward Highway. The caller identified the two as Frank Standifer, age 41, and Brenda Cunningham, age 39, both from Anchorage.

Troopers responded to the area and found the vehicle to be empty. They patrolled the area in the frigid single digit temperatures and high winds attempting to locate the two individuals.

At 3:11 am, troopers received a call from Standifer informing them that he was suffering from cold weather exposure and requesting medical assistance. When troopers responded to Standifer’s location, they found him alone. When asked about Cunningham, Standifer told troopers that he last saw Cunningham in the Bird Creek area.

Standifer was transported to an Anchorage hospital as the Girdwood Fire Department and troopers patrolled the area in an attempt to locate Cunningham.

With no luck in the ground search in the darkness, at daylight, the AST helo was launched and the search began from the air. At 9:30 am, the helicopter located Cunningham walking near mile 96 of the Seward Highway. Troopers on the ground went to her location, picked her up, and transported her to her residence.

After Standifer was released from the hospital, troopers arrested him on a $10,000 Felony Failure to Appear warrant.
