A Fairbanks man was arrested and transported to the Fairbanks Correctional Center after a one hour armed standoff that involved the Northern Special Response Team near the Richardson Highway and Badger Road on Sunday.
The lead-up to the standoff on the Richardson Highway and Badger Road on Sunday afternoon began the day before within Fairbanks. It was then that troopers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Daniel Bottomly of Fairbanks at 1:30 pm.
Bottomly, who was fitted with a GPS tracking device in connection with a pending Felony DUI case, failed to stop for the attempted traffic stop. He sped away from troopers through the streets of Fairbanks, reaching “speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour,” troopers report.
Citing public safety reasons, troopers gave up the chase and monitored him via his tracking device. Bottomly was tracked traveling south on the Richardson Highway at speeds of 90 miles per hour and greater. Then, Bottomly’s ankle bracelet ceased all movement near Rozak Road.
Troopers responded to the area to find that Bottomly had removed his tracking device. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
Then on Sunday afternoon at 3:40 pm, troopers received a tip that Bottomly was parked in a vehicle near Badger Road and the Richardson Highway. The caller also informed troopers that Bottomly was in possession of several firearms.
Troopers responded to the area , set up a perimeter, made phone contact with Bottomly, and the Northern Special Response Team (SERT) was activated.
Troopers say that “after a little more than an hour of negotiations, Bottomly surrendered without incident.”
Bottomly was arrested and transported to the Fairbanks Correctional Center where he was remanded and charged with Felony Elude, Driving with License Revoked, Violation of Conditions of Release, and Warrant Arrest.
Bottomly’s bail was set at $50,000.
