Crafts Weekend returns Thanksgiving weekend with a variety of unique, Alaska-made jewelry, pottery, woodwork and more from nearly 50 Alaskan artists. This year’s vendors include Rick Potter, who was a construction worker for 24 years before he adapted his metal working skills to making fine jewelry, and Ed Mighell, who used his engineering background to develop a unique clay from Cook Inlet mud to make ceramic tiles. Alaska’s premier juried crafts show is held in conjunction with the ReadAlaska Book Fair featuring Alaskan authors and illustrators. A portion of each sale helps support the Anchorage Museum. Museum general admission is free (Please note: This does not include the premium “Brick by Brick” exhibition.)

For many Alaska families, journeying to the Anchorage Museum to see “Wonderland of Toys” is a beloved holiday tradition. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, the museum’s atrium is transformed into a dazzling tableau of toys, some that date back as far as the 1800s. Against a backdrop of twinkling lights and tinsel, find carousel horses, antique toys, and a towering evergreen tree decorated with more than 100 dolls wearing costumes from around the world.
“Wonderland of Toys” highlights include:
- A charming 30-piece, hand-painted wood Schoenhut Humpty Dumpty circus created in 1908 in Germany.
- A completely furnished Victorian-style dollhouse. The late Anchorage attorney Hal Horton built the dollhouse for his granddaughter, and when she outgrew it, his family donated it to the museum. The dollhouse includes a replica Sydney Laurence painting above the fireplace mantel.
- Carousel horses. Local collector Linda Walsh has loaned the museum several carousel animals from her extensive collection, which she has carefully restored.
“Wonderland of Toys” is included in museum general admission.
1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14
Hear those sleigh bells jingling at our annual celebration of holiday music. Enjoy the sounds of the season performed by local favorites including the Anchorage Concert Chorus. Museum general admission is free all day thanks to Wells Fargo. (Please note: This does not include the premium “Brick by Brick” exhibition.)
Anchorage Museum Holiday Closures
In winter the Anchorage Museum is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed on Nov. 27, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
