On Monday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard was called and informed of a vessel sinking in Prince William Sound.
Five people went into the water off of Crafton Island in Prince William Sound between 2pm and 3 pm yesterday when their 32-foot boat sank after striking a rock.
A good Samaritan vessel responded to the scene and plucked a man and three children from the water, but were unable to locate the fifth person, Cathaleen M. Powell.

Civilian divers would locate Powell a short time later under the surface. CPR was performed on Powell unsuccessfully and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The United States Coast Gaurd repsonded to the scene and picked up the four survivors and Powell’s remains.

The Coast Guard contacted the Alaska State Troopers at 4 pm and apprised them of the rescue and subsequent death.
According to Alaska State Trooper reports, Powell’s body is being sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy.
