Citing the eight-hour survivability rate of a man in the water, the United States Coast Guard called off the search for missing Akhiok man, Brandon Phillips on Sunday. The Coast Guard had dispatched several helicopters to the area to search for the missing man over the weekend.
On Monday morning, at 9:05 am, nine members of the Kodiak Island Search and Rescue departed Kodiak for the village after weather condition improved allowing air travel. They joined searchers from the community of Akhiok, state troopers, and wildlife troopers. The patrol vessel Woldstad is also on the scene searching for the missing man.
On Saturday, after Phillips had not been seen for several hours, searchers from the community formed up and searched for Phillips and were able to locate his ATV and an abandoned kayak. It is suspected that Phillips was in the kayak when he ran into trouble. Phillips had left Akhiok early on Saturday at approximately 6:20 am.
