On Tuesday, the fishing vessel "Beverly Ann" reported an injury aboard their vessel fifty miles southeast of Seward. The vessel operator reported that a 22-year-old crewmember had been struck in the head by deck equipment.
After receiving the satellite phone message from the vessel, 17th district watchstanders directed the launch of the helicopter in Cordova.
The helicopter aircrew rendezvoused with the 54-foot purse seiner, and picked up the injured crewmember from the beach where the crewmember was transported for pickup.
“This case, the second medevac for the FOL Cordova aircrew in two days, shows the importance of the seasonal deployment,” said Lt. j.g. Theodore Borny, a watchstander at the Coast Guard 17th District Command Center. “Our forward operating locations reduce the time needed to respond to emergencies and allow us to transport mariners in distress to the medical care they need as quickly as possible.”
The crewmember was transported to Anchorage for treatment of his injuries.
