Around 1:15 a.m., January 1, 2012, Anchorage Police received a 911 call reporting that two pedestrians had been struck by a Dodge pick-up near West 11th Avenue and I Street. Witnesses were also reporting that the driver of the vehicle was attempting to leave the scene but was unable to because it had become stuck on a snow bank following the collision.
Ashley Marie Brotherton, 24, and her male friend, Clayton Tyler Wilbanks, also 24 and both from Anchorage, were walking on the sidewalk headed northbound on the west side of I Street when they were both struck from behind. Witnesses reported that the pick-up was driving recklessly just prior to the collision at the intersection of West 11th Avenue and I Street. Witnesses state the pick-up then spun around and became stuck on a snow bank. The driver attempted to drive away but was unable to leave. At this point, two male subjects pulled the driver from the vehicle and held him on the ground until police arrived.
Brotherton and Wilbanks were transported to local hospitals. Brotherton is listed in critical condition with a traumatic head injury along with other injuries and Wilbanks is listed in stable condition.
Members of the Major Collision Investigative Unit were called out to investigate the collision. It is believed that alcohol may have been a factor in this collision and charges may be forthcoming once toxicology results have been obtained. At this time no citations or arrests have been made. Anyone else who may have been a witness to this collision is asked to call Fatality Investigator Rick Steiding at 786-2669. The investigation is continuing.
