The Old Harbor VPSO and members of the Old Harbor tribe had tried to discourage the bear from digging under the fence on previous occasions with limited results.
The U.S. marine Corps, which is working on the runway project in the community, using heavy equipment, had even tried to place rock over portions of the landfill fence that the bear accessed on a regular basis to discourage its attempt to access the landfill by going under the fence with no results.
The bear has repeatedly charged workers in the area according to reports.
The Kodiak ADF&G was informed of the shooting in defense of life and property at 12:25 pm on Monday.
The female bear was found to be emaciated with no layers of fat and was also blind in one eye. Her four cubs have not been seen since the incident.
The hide and skull of the belligerent bear was sent to ADF&G in Kodiak
