Alaska State Troopers are warning Alaskans of an "American Awards" scam after a Fairbanks woman contacted troopers reporting an incident to them on Monday.
According to the trooper dispatch, an elderly woman reported that she had been contacted by two men informing her that she had been selected to be awarded $5,000 from the American Awards, a spurious organization out of Las Vegas.
In order to take advantage of this “too good to be true” opportunity, the elderly woman was to purchase a $250 money pack from Wal Mart to complete the transaction. After she purchased the money pack, she was to meet the two men at a specified location to do the hand-off. She was told to go alone. She was also told that once the purchase and hand-off was completed, that the $5,000 would be credited to her credit card.
Troopers say that not only did the woman save herself from being a vicitm of the scam, but by coming forward, has saved others from becoming a victim themselves. Troopers are advising all Alaskans to be leery of these types of interactions with strangers.
