Survivor Day: International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day | November 19
November 19 is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day—a day when people who’ve lost a loved one to suicide come together. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention invites you to join a 90-minute online program including a screening of the documentary Life Journeys: Reclaiming Life after Loss, a new AFSP-produced Survivor Day documentary that traces the grief and healing journey that follows a suicide loss over time. Drawing on stories and insights from the long-term loss survivors, the film shows us that through resilience and support we can achieve hope and understanding in our lives while celebrating the lives of those we lost.
Following the film will be a post-screening discussion on coping and healing after a suicide loss; and Q&A Shannon Donnick, AFSP’s Loss & Healing Programs Manager, Clarena Tobon-Guevara and Dionne Monsanto, suicide loss survivors and volunteers, and online viewers. If you cannot join the live viewing, you will be able to watch the recorded program at your convenience afterwards.

Prevent Winter Falls and Slips: Injury Prevention Tips for Safe Winter Walking
The winter season is upon us and with it comes more darkness, colder weather, ice and freshly fallen snow. These conditions increase the risk of slip and fall related injuries like bruises, broken bones and more. Here are a few safety tips to help you avoid injury when walking on ice and snow this winter.
Tip #1 – Plan Ahead
When walking on ground that is slippery, walk slowly and take smaller steps. Give yourself enough time to get where you need to go without rushing. The risk of slipping and falling increases when you are in a hurry and are walking faster. Look for the safest route to your destination and avoid taking short cuts or walking on uneven ground.
Tip #2 – Wear the Right Shoes (or Cleats)
Proper footwear is a must during winter months. Choose pairs that have visible treads to provide traction and avoid wearing shoes or boots with smooth soles. Also consider investing in a pair of ice cleats or grippers.
Tip #3 – Keep Your Hands Free
Wear gloves so you can keep your hands out of your pockets. This helps you maintain balance and allows you the opportunity to protect and catch yourself if you do fall. Avoid distractions and wait to use your phone of dig into your purse or backpack until you’ve arrived safely at your destination.
