It was announced by the U.S. Attorney's office that Ketchikan man, Jon William Munhoven was found guilty by a Juneau jury of Assault of a Federal Officer on Thursday.
The jury of eight men and four women found Munhoven guilty for an incident aboard a Coast Guard Response Boat Small or RBS in September of 2013.
It was then that the Coast Guard had launched the RBS in response to a call of an assault that had taken place on a vessel near Ketchikan.
The RBS traveled through thick fog to get to the mariner in distress. When they arrived at the vessel, the responders found the owner of the vessel with a bloodied nose and reported that he had been assaulted by Munhoven. Munhoven, meanwhile was irate and hostile during the boarding and was asked to depart the man’s boat.
The vessel was taken under tow and began the trip to the port of Ketchikan.
Munhoven eventually was handcuffed and placed on the aft deck of the RBS, but continued to disregard directions given to him by the crew of the response boat. Then while being moved by the crew, Munhoven actively resisted the action, according to testimony given to the court. It was then that Munhoven kicked one of the response boat crewmembers in the face, injuring him.
At sentencing, Munhoven faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 and three years of supervised release.
Munhoven is scheduled to be sentenced on June 23, 2014.
