A Ketchikan man was arraigned on a charge of assault on a Federal officer in Juneau on Monday according to a statement by U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler on Tuesday.
A plea of “Not Guilty” was entered by 55-year-old Ketchikan resident Jon William Munhoven, who is also known as John William Mundhoven, during his court appearnace on Monday.
The information presented in court on Monday stated that the United States Coast Guard responded to a disturbance on a vessel outside of Ketchikan and contacted Munhoven. After contacting the Ketchikan man, USCG officers removed Munhoven from the vessel and escorted him to the patrol vessel and placed him in restraints.
After securing Munhoven, the Coast Guard attached the vessel and began towing it in to Ketchikan. During the tow, according to court documents, Munhoven became “hostile and aggressive” and so was placed on the deck of the USCG patrol vessel “for his safety and the safety of other personnel.” It was at that time that Munhoven kicked a Coast Guard officer in the face causing injury according to the report.
It was pointed out by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Schmidt, who is prosecuting the case, “that the law provides for a maximum total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.”
Munhoven was transported to the Ketchikan jail where he was remanded without bail.
