LONGMONT, Colorado (January 24, 2014) – First Nations Oweesta Corporation (Oweesta) is pleased to be collaborating with Cook Inlet Tribal Council and KeyBank to host the next Building Native Communities: Financial Skills for Families, fourth edition, Certified Instructor Training.

This training will offer a three-day, state-of-the-art training and certification program to help Native CDFIs, tribes and other Native organizations establish and sustain financial education programs in their communities. This training will take place February 26-28, 2014 at The Rasmussen Conference Center located in Anchorage, Alaska.

Building Native Communities was created in 2000 and brought together a team of specialist with backgrounds in Native education and financial skills. These experts understood materials must be relevant to and accessible within diverse Native communities. An underlying goal of this curriculum is to empower Native people, particularly in relation to personal financial management. Therefore, the curriculum approaches financial skills from diverse Native perspectives, building upon and reinforcing traditional values and knowledge.

There are six sessions in the curriculum:

1. Building a Healthy Economy

2. Developing a Spending Plan

3. Working with Checking and Savings Accounts

4. Understanding Credit and Your Credit Report

5. Accessing Credit, Part I

6. Accessing Credit, Part II

Thanks to funding from KeyBank this class is free, therefore the cost to attendees will be travel and accommodations. Upon completion of the training, participants will be prepared to successfully pass the Building Native Communities exam, becoming certified financial education trainers.
